Get It Where You Can

The availability of DNA fingerprinting has enabled scientists to evaluate fidelity and shown up a very large incidence of promiscuity. Males are always seeking out females and females, although clearly socially monogamous, are also sexually promiscuous. That’s the thing, isn’t it? Socially (or outwardly) monogamous, but sexually promiscuous!

Faithful? Of Course I'm Faithful! Some new couples copulate very frequently indeed and it is thought that, even then, infidelity is quite common. In spite of this frequency of lovemaking, figures suggest that around ten to fifteen percent of all offspring are the result of a clandestine affair.

Couples with offspring will cooperate to defend their family and its assets, but while females are busy homebuilding, giving birth and nurturing their young, the males often take the opportunity to seek out illicit sex.

Equally, though, females are at least as promiscuous as males and frequently spread their favours far and wide. In fact, sexual monogamy is the exception rather than the rule and it is quite normal for one or more offspring in a family to be fathered by other males.

Now I’m sure that some readers are by now becoming somewhat apoplectic, whilst others are nodding and saying, “Go for it, honey (or son, depending on their point of view).” However, whether you believe me or not, you really do owe it to yourself to take a look at this article here with its associated scientific explanations.

It’s a funny old world, isn’t it?
